My Lesson Learnt

Nicola January 7, 2025

This is the section where you translate the experience in valuable lessons learnt and best practices for your future. Metaphorically, it’s about the journey much more than the arrival. It’s about the process rather than the results. I recommend using the STAR model to answer it.

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result: it works as a remainder to assess any issue. We start by explaining the Situation at the beginning, to mention the Task we were given. Consequently, we identify the Action (as well as the set of Actions) that conducted us to the current Result.

The following example is borrowed from the UK National Careers Service and uses the STAR method to answer an interview question on leadership skills:

SituationIn my previous digital marketing job, the company wanted to get more people to sign up to a newsletter which was not receiving a lot of attention.

Task – My job was to find a way of getting more people to sign up.

Action – I organised a meeting with other members of the marketing team to come up with creative ideas, and I led the social media campaign to generate interest in the revamped newsletter.

Result – Over a period of 3 months, there was an 25% increase in sign-ups to the newsletter and the approach I took was used by the management team in other departments.

So, now your turn: can you apply the STAR method to the activity you just completed?
