Masterclass | Composition

119

We define composition as the purposeful management and strategic arrangement of the features that we place inside the frame.  With the perspective, we will argue how points, lines and areas shape images in relation equally in relation to what is outside the frame.

Composition should be best approached as an endlessly sought-after and never-ending gymnick: hence, the best way to learn composition is by mentally composing all the time, to continuously shape mental visual images, and foresee these prior to shooting them.  Learning to visualise is arguably the most effective skill to build effective visual competencies.

Composition is one of the 5 lessons of MIA.  These can be engaged in any order, even independently!, yet I would advise to follow this order: first Storytelling, then Aesthetics and Composition, and, finally, Montage and Storyboarding.

Description

Composition aims to purposefully manage and strategically arrange that which is within the frame, i.e. to compose lines, spaces and volumes with a clear intention.

This lesson complements Aesthetics as the two features that most craft visual storytelling.  Specifically, in Composition we will focus on how points, lines and areas define relations that which is within the frame.

Composition is one of the 5 lessons part of the MIA course.  These can be engaged in any order, even independently!, yet I would advise to follow this order: first Storytelling, then Aesthetics and Composition, and, finally, Montage and Storyboarding.  As mentioned, you can equally work on these 5 as self-standing lessons or complement them according to your liking.

MIA stands for the Meta-Image App, and this is the thoroughly enhanced version of the App that the Quintin Hogg Trust generously funded while I was leading the Digital and Interactive Storytelling LAB at the University of Westminster in London, UK.  MIA has been translating my expertise as a professional photographer and university professor into a consequential course to introduce foundational competencies in storytelling practices including key components in visual literacy, and it continues to evolve to respond to the latest requirements of today’s digital cultures.

Welcome to Composition!
